Gardening is for Everyone
Gardening isn’t just about having ‘green fingers’, it’s about the simple joy of giving it a go. I would add, you don’t even need a garden to be a gardener! Just a passion for growing plants whether they be inside or outside.
Deep down, we’re all gardeners, trying to connect with plants and nature. You don’t need much space; a window-box, porch, or indoor windowsill will do.
Growing plants not only makes your space more beautiful but also helps wildlife and the planet. It keeps you fit, healthy, and can even provide you with delicious food. It’s simple: gardening helps us feel good.
My life as a gardener
My gardening career includes managing some of the most beautiful gardens in the country including RHS Wisley, RHS Harlow Carr, Coleton Fishacre, Painshill, Sheffield Park, Polesden Lacey, Compton Castle and Agatha Christie’s Greenway. I also worked as a horticultural writer and producer for the BBC.
I live by the sea on the gorgeous English Riviera in South Devon. When I’m not gardening, I’m usually found exploring Dartmoor or walking the coast path with my two spaniels Beanie and River.
My Books
As an author, I’ve had the opportunity to write over 30 gardening books. My goal is always to share practical, inspiring advice that helps people succeed.
Topics include pruning, garden design, flower borders and ornamental plants, composting, plants in containers, kitchen gardening, lawns, trees and shrubs, and even gardening quiz books.

It All Starts With One Plant

Your Turn to Grow
You don’t need a large, outdoor space to be a gardener, your journey can begin today with a single pot. Whether it’s a window-box for bright flowers, a small porch for a climbing plant, or a sunny windowsill for fresh herbs, the first step is always the most important. Don’t wait for the ‘perfect’ space; the perfect time is now.
When you plant something, you’re creating a small pocket of beauty, helping local wildlife, and improving the planet. You’re also investing in yourself: in your health, your fitness, and your happiness. Gardening helps us and those around us feel good. Everybody wins.
So, I encourage you to grab a trowel and get planting. If you’d like to learn more, look out for my upcoming Gardening Academy experience days, or explore my books for practical inspiration. The joy of gardening is for everyone, and it’s waiting for you.
